Here we have the JRP SS EGT v3 probe & cable. Over the years of selling gauges that use EGT sensors, we’ve learned a lot about what makes a reliable and accurate exhaust gas temperature sensor—and which areas of the design need extra attention to improve durability, especially in tough conditions. With thousands of vehicles running our sensors, we had a wealth of real-world feedback to draw on when developing the JRP EGT v3, making it a true step up from our trusted v2 models.
For customers who’ve purchased our gauges in the past and want to upgrade from the v2 sensors, the JRP EGT v3 is fully compatible with all our gauge products that use EGT inputs, including our 14-in-1 multi gauge. We also offer these sensors separately for those who want a high-quality EGT sensor to pair with aftermarket ECUs or data loggers.
Several key design improvements have been made with the v3 sensor. First, we’ve moved to a 2520 stainless steel probe body and increased the probe diameter from 3mm to 4mm. This upgrade provides better protection for the induction point and improves overall durability. The shape has also been refined with a taper from the top to the tip, further enhancing resilience.
As with our v2 sensors, the v3 uses high-quality multi-core wire—specifically 16 AWG—from the induction point back to the Deutsch connector. One of the major reasons cheaper EGT sensors fail is due to the use of single-core wire, which is far less robust. The v3’s induction point is also shielded to prevent grounding issues from external sources that could cause inaccurate readings.
The response rate of the v3 has been improved slightly over the already quick v2, which received a lot of praise for its responsiveness. In terms of accuracy, the v3 continues the tradition, with reference testing by our workshop partners showing readings within 1% of professional dyno EGT setups.
To clarify, we are still selling our v2 EGT sensors because they remain an excellent, cost-effective option. In fact, all of our EGT-compatible products, including the 14-in-1 multi gauge and our 52mm EGT gauges, continue to come standard with the v2 sensor. Many customers find them more than sufficient for their needs.
However, for those who regularly push EGT sensors to the limit—whether you’re running a lean naturally aspirated setup that sits in the 900°C range or a hardcore off-road diesel rig that has a history of breaking sensors—the v3 offers a tougher, more resilient solution at an accessible price point.
We chose not to phase out the v2 sensor in favor of the v3 because we want to keep quality options available at different price points. If budget is tight, the v2 remains a strong performer. But if you want the best—or have a history of going through sensors—the v3 is a worthy upgrade.
It’s all part of our commitment here at JRP to provide solutions that fit a variety of needs, vehicles, and budgets.
